These Good Old Days

I love this song by Macklemore and Kesha. It evokes memories of people and places; those things bring tears to my eyes! Macklemore reminds me of my friend and mountain leader, Des. When M&K sing their song, it reminds me of the good times with Des and the remarkable guide team we had in the Northern Drakensberg. There was so much banter as we trekked, paddled, and camped. I would not have changed them for anything; they were the magic of those good old days!

"I wish somebody would have told me, babe,

Some day, these will be the good old days,

All the love you won't forget,

And all these reckless nights you won't regret.

Someday soon, your whole life's going to change,

You'll miss the magic of these good old days."

My colleague, a renowned teacher, told me how full of life and energy he was at 50. He is still teaching today at the age of 73. As I am almost 50, his whimsical reminiscence has made me contemplate the need to get active! Therefore, I have decided to begin my training season and shed some of my winter warmth. I have resumed cycling, and while on my ride, I saw my son, Sam, returning from his run. We stopped, hugged, and chatted while admiring the beautiful spring sunset. A song was playing at that moment, and I will cherish this memory for a long time.

My wife worked on a nature reserve and was approached by a walker who expressed earnest concern about the wet and dangerous paths. The walker suggested that the paths should be closed. In her mind, my wife replied, "Yes, it's called the outdoors."
