"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." Jim Elliott 1949. Jim is a martyred missionary, faith with feet, who gave his life sharing his faith with Ecuadorian Indians. This profound quote speaks of duty first and others before self.
As I prepare for a wedding sermon, something I've not done for a while, I reflect on the challenges I regularly present to my wife and family. Practising what I preach is remarkably difficult. My beautiful, dutiful, patient wife kindly says, "please try and be less! It is not the James show; it's not about you!"
One of my pupils recently said that my opinion was ranty. "Not everyone needs to think the same as you; allow others to have their voice." She said it kindly with grace and confidence. I knew she was right and that I was wrong - again! Darn it!
